WHOA! I get the job I want! Months ago my department offered me very neat work that I totally want. But, like, they didn't have a way to pay me to do it. Until today! The governor signed a bill that has a line item specifically for my position. It has been very odd, having my career direction waiting on a particular piece of legislation. But today, ten months later, on the very last day possible, the governor signed the bill. I get the job I'm mostly already doing!
You know what, 'long as I'm being indiscreet, I might as well be more indiscreet. One task I'm doing right now is writing standards for water managers to handle climate change. They handed the job to me with virtually no instruction. So I was all, cool. Fine. I happen to know that the governor's office is also writing standards for climate change in CEQA and city General Plans. I called over. They're all, yeah, that's what we're doing and we have nothing written. I'm all, do you know of anyone who has written anything? They're all, maybe CalTrans? But those offices are in a big long process and my office told me to write something up in weeks. Sure.
Now I know about this stuff and lord knows I have opinions. So I'm writing these standards. Who knows if they'll survive review by the next level up. I don't think they expect what they'll get from me. But some of it might last, and if it does, not only will water managers who want money from us have to follow them, but since we'll put them out first, other departments will look to them as a starting place. It feels strange and disproportionately influential.
